It is great to walk into an English class and hear students announce, ‘Reading is awesome!’ which is exactly the kind of attitude we want to encourage at Institut Sankt Joseph. To help our students become avid readers we need more English books.

We are conducting a book drive in Week 48 (24-28 November). We will conclude this week-long event with a gathering in the library for the parents and children of the International Bilingual Department on Friday, November 28th, from 15:00-16:30. The aim of our book drive is to collect books to use for students in both the Danish and International Departments. Our goal is to receive 150 books!

Books can be delivered into the bin that will be placed in the hallway between the little gym and the theatre from Monday, November 24th until Friday, November 28th. It is important that books are in good condition. We cannot use magazines, textbooks, encyclopaedias or coloring books.

(Update 13.12.2014) As a result of the wonderful work of students from 2i, Auricia Tama-Sweet and parents from the entire school, Institut Sankt Joseph was able to add over 325 English books to the library.  In addition 3.800 kr.- was raised and donated to UNICEF as a result of the book drive reading project in the international department´s 2i class.)

Last week, two of the International bilingual classes (1i and 2i) chose to work with different topics related to intercultural understanding. Teachers Auricia and Dennis worked with the students on the following projects throughout the week:

Monday: Intro to culture; Dennis and I created two books with activities for them to work on throughout the week.

Tuesday: African culture, Icelandic culture (presentations from parents, books, music, and more)

Wednesday: Italian culture (music, maps, videos)

Thursday: Danish culture (excursion to Statens museum for Kunst), World culture (Botanisk have)

Friday: Culture through food (students made traditional Danish dessert), and multicultural quiz, plus book presentations from students.

A very special thanks to our guest speakers and helpers: Phillipa Stasiuk, Jenna Stefansdottir and Stefano Zorzi and Kathryn Clarkson, who dedicated their time last week to helping the students understand and enjoy other cultures.

On Friday the 31st of October, students from the international department were greeted by teacher Amelia, better known as the “lektieheks” that day! Luckily it wasn´t all homework and fright, but rather a day full of making finger cookies, spiders and fluorescent lights in science class.

Recently, one of Institut Sankt Joseph´s 8th grade classes (8.b) hosted students and teachers from Thailand. The day started with the special visitors joining in the morning song assembly in the theatre. After the singing of a Danish song, the visitors performed the Thai national anthem.

The students were able to speak about their respective countries and traditions to our students throughout the day. Among the traditions that day, was a traditional thai dance and a reading of H.C. Andersen in English.

In addition to dancing and songs the students exchanged traditional Danish and Thai food. It was truly an intercultural experience for all involved!

The comenius projec, is a european union funded initiative that t is meant to strengthen partnerships between European Union countries. The specific project that teachers from Institut Sankt Joseph and the other schools mentioned above are currently working on is entitled “When children and music meet.” This project deals with how music can strengthen learning in early primary education.

This is not the first time these teachers have collaborated together, as they have visited each other in different host countries over the past year.

Below are pictures from a special school assembly, where the visiting teachers and leaders were bid welcome with food and a traditional danish dance.

This summer Institut Sankt Joseph, a private school in the Østerbro district of Copenhagen, continued its unique bilingual (Danish and English) summer program, which promotes language acquisition through activity content. The program in only its 2nd year has already doubled in size, with over 100 children in attendance from July 14-August 1st. The program focuses on Danish and English as a second language, sports, theatre, cooking, arts and crafts, cultural excursions and community service in the local area. The ISJ summer program is designed to encourage personal growth, internationalization, integration and allow students to develop specific abilities over the summer holiday.
One of Institute Sankt Joseph´s formation ideals, which are deeply rooted in the Catholic-humanistic tradition, is that students take responsibility for their fellow man and the world. The school believes that it is vital that this ideal is developed through service. Thus, one of the key components of the summer program is that students and teachers work together on community service projects in the local community. The goal of the summer service initative is for students to see how their work, even during the summer holiday, makes a real difference in the local community. This year the students worked at two locations: Hellerup Strand and Plejecentre Kjærbo.. The service took place a couple hours every week and has given younger children and older children alike the ability to give back in a positive surrounding.

The school looks forward to continuing to provide programs designed to encourage integration, language acquisition and giving back through cultural exposure, teamwork, physical exercise and artistic expression.

2014 marks a year of expansion for Institut Sankt Joseph, as the number of students has increased from 560-675. This expansion is due to the opening of a new International Bilingual Department, as well as a new International 10th grade class.  Thus, a new sign in front of the school was created so that all could now see the exicting new programs the school has to offer. The sign is in two sections, with both danish and english tekst, but is bound together in the logo of our school. This symbolisation shows that although we have different departments, which have different teaching languages, we are one school.

For the 2nd time in 4 years, all staff at Institut Sankt Joseph were invited on a team building trip in one of europe´s most beautiful cities; Barcelona!  One of the explicit goals of the trip was to visit a school in Barcelona and take home some inspiration from their local practices. The school of choice was Col-ligi Lestonnac, which is a Catholic school of approximately 1,200 students between the ages of 5-18. All staff were given a presentation of the school, along with guided tours and a choral performance. One of the interesting elements of the school was that they have a mandatory 2 minute mediation after every recess.

In addition to the school visit, there were cultural tours given by some of the teachers, who have either lived in Barcelona or who know the city quite well. The staff were treated to the architecture of Gaudi, beautiful churches, tapas, cava and sunshine in the days that followed. The trip culminated with a visit to a monestary up on the surrounding hiltops overlooking Barcelona. There was a common service held and the trip rounded out with a wonderful lunch and a little wine tasting, before the tired but happy staff returned to Institut Sankt Joseph once again!

One of the many wonderful traditions at Institut Sankt Joseph occurs each Spring, when all 8th grade students have the opportunity to travel to Rome. Our students have a chance to experience the city; full of so much history throughout the ages. In addition to visiting ancient ruins, our students have had the pleasure of visiting Vatican City and taking some pictures of the pope himself.  In addition to seeing famous sites, our students visited a local school to see how school life operates in Rome. The trip is far more than just a touristic experience, as our students took part in feeding the homeless at a soup kitchen. This experience of helping those less fortunate, even outside of the borders of Denmark, has had an extremely positive effect on all that participated.

Students in the early primary years at Institut Sankt Joseph have been selected to participate in a two year educational project with schools from Turkey, Bulgaria, Portugal and Italy. The goal of the international project is for students and teachers around Europe to find ways to incorporate music into weekly teaching lessons. To kick off the project, members of ISJ were recently in Bulgaria. In September 2014, Institut Sankt Joseph will welcome the exchange participants to our school in Copenhagen. The project is sponsored by a grant from the EU and is entitled “When Children and Music Meet Together.”
