A labyrinth in the schoolyard:
Our schoolyard is coming in for a strong finish, – albeit a little delayed, as digging was required to ensure fibre network connection to the gym.

To finish off the whole project, a giant labyrinth was completed in the middle of the schoolyard. The labyrinth is a replica of the well-known “Labyrinth of Life” in Chartres Cathedral in France. It measures 12.85 metres in diameter, and the walk to the centre of the labyrinth is 261 metres long. It is from the 13th century and symbolises the individual’s intricate path through life- a path that hopefully brings the seeker closer to both himself / herself and to God. To this day, the labyrinth is used in Chartres. Every Friday, the church pews are moved to the side after which the residents of Chartres are able to walk through the labyrinth – in thought, meditation and prayer.

The labyrinth can be seen as a good example of what we aim for for the students in an educational sense. We would like to equip them to be able to reflect and choose in the “labyrinth of life” in terms of opinions, direction and faith. It is thus a great wish on the school’s part that our students are anchored by what they learn at ISJ, so that later in life, they cannot stray too far. And so here are the last words on the Chartres labyrinth: One is brought forward through the intricate paths. Sometimes close to the centre and sometimes far from it. But get lost- that cannot be J.

We will be working on teaching materials for the labyrinth that can be used in philosophy in middle school / mellemtrinnet. It can also be used in lots of games in the breaks.

For the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, an ecumenical service is being held on Monday October 31st with participation from a number of prominent figures: the Pope, bishops, priests, politicians, cultural figures etc.
The Pope has decided to remain in Sweden an extra day and hold a 9:30 a.m. mass in Swedbank stadium in Malmø, which has room for 30,000 participants.

During the autumn holiday, we received confirmation that ISJ would receive 210 tickets, and so it was decided that our entire secondary would be attending.  It will be a great experience for everyone. Pope
Francis has in particular made his mark felt beyond the boundaries of the Catholic Church. To name but one example, he was invited to give the opening speech at the Europa parliament in 2014. His main topic was the protection of human dignity, which he stated was the EU’s greatest task- a rehumanisation of Europe, if you like.

There will therefore be more than enough to discuss with the students in Religion, Danish and Social Studies both before and after the mass on Tuesday.

Every Wednesday, a lunch mass is held in the school church for those children and teachers who would like to participate. It is a short Catholic service that ends with everyone eating lunch together in the school kitchen.
In the photo, you can see Daniel Nørgaard, who is the parish priest at Saint Ansgar Church.

“Lunch mass” is a weekly tradition at Institut Sankt Joseph. Every Wednesday students and faculty are invited to a voluntary service in the school chapel, followed by lunch together in the school´s kitchen.

In one of the pictures, it is possible to see our new pedagogical alter piece, where students can continually use their creativity to change the design of the piece. This usually takes place during religion or art class.

The church itself has been completely renovated over the last 6 months. A must see if one has not seen the church post renovation!

On Friday the 12th of December, the 6th grade girls of Institut Sankt Joseph paraded through the school singing traditional Sankt Lucia hymns. The entire school was dark so that only the light illuminating from the candles could be seen as the girls walked by.

After their performance at the school, the girls continued on to the American Embassy, Østerbro Svømmehal and a local nursing home. The beauty of the event was once again a special occasion for all involved.

On Wednesday the 20th of August, we will once again be starting the weekly “lunch mass.” The weekly “lunch mass”program includes a short mass in the school´s church, where students of all faiths are welcome to attend. Following the celebration of the mass, which includes classic church hymns, all participating students go down to the kitchen to eat a wonderful lunch served by our staff. This dish could be anything from lasagna to pizza!  The lunch portion of “frokostmesse” is held during the normal lunch break of the school. This mid-week tradition is a wonderful opportunity to explore spirituality, come together in fellowship and of course eat some good food!

Today, Friday the 21st of March, we honour a tragic day for both our school and country. On this day in 1945, our sister school, Jean d’ Arc School in Frederiksberg, was accidentaly bombed by allied pilots during the English attack on the Gestapo headquarters in Copenhagen.  One of the bombers lost control during the approach into Copenhagen, and crashed into a nearby building in Frederiksberg, The following planes erroneously interpreted the crashed plane as a signal for where they should strike, and thus dropped bombs on the school. The tragedy that day led to the deaths of 86 school children and 18 adults, among them nuns who worked at the school.

There are many heroic stories from that day, wherin some of the sisters fearlessly tried to cover the children to protect them.  After the incident, the school never reopened. Most of the surviving children were transferred to our school, Institut Sankt Joseph, and thus became a part of the identity and history of our school.

On the school premises, we keep several monuments of our former sister school.  In front of the school there stands a sculpture showing a Saint Joseph Sister with two children by her side. The same motif is seen inside the school, and is the draft for a sculpture which today can be seen on Frederiksberg Allé. In addition,one can see a statue of Jean d’ Arc in the school yard. It is precisely this statue, which was undamaged in the bombing, that once stood in the garden of Jean d´Arc school.

Today we honor the children, adults and sisters who lost their lives and showed bravery that day. We carry the memory of their school and tradition forward and cherish the common history we share,  that tragically was brought about by the events in 1945.
