On Friday the 12th of December, the 6th grade girls of Institut Sankt Joseph paraded through the school singing traditional Sankt Lucia hymns. The entire school was dark so that only the light illuminating from the candles could be seen as the girls walked by.

After their performance at the school, the girls continued on to the American Embassy, Østerbro Svømmehal and a local nursing home. The beauty of the event was once again a special occasion for all involved.

On Friday the 31st of October, students from the international department were greeted by teacher Amelia, better known as the “lektieheks” that day! Luckily it wasn´t all homework and fright, but rather a day full of making finger cookies, spiders and fluorescent lights in science class.

Motionsdagen began in the school yard with some warmup dancing! The teams were composed of students from different class and grade levels. The students then processed to Fælledparken, where they participated in such diverse activities as “The Limbo”, mental gymnastics, gymnastics and even a little baseball.

The weather was beautiful, and the students from ISJ were joined by other students from nearby schools. The children took a well deserved lunch break at the park, before continuing the different activities of the day.

It was wonderful to see the older students assisting the younger ones, who progressively became a bit tired as the day rolled on.

The day ended with an assembly back in the school yard, where the children sang together. After a wonderful day and some fresh fruit as a parting treat, the children departed for “efterårsferie!”

Students from Institut Sankt Joseph recently participated in the “Katolsk Lege” or Catholic games at Gentofte stadium in Lyngby. Students from 5th-8th grade parcipated in different competitions; such as, football, softball and field hockey. The games began with a festive opening ceremony, where the students marched in. The weather was fantastic, Institut Sankt Joseph competed valiantly and all participants had a great day!

It is time again for our 2nd annual alumni (Oldies) event at Institut Sankt Joseph.

This year the event will take place June 13th from 18:00-22:00 at the school, which lies on Dag Hammarskjølds Allé 17. 

Please join us and bring your good humor and memories with, as we celebrate together.

There will a welcome drink, along with different salad and bread products provided by the school, and we kindly ask that you bring meat to grill. In addition there will be a cash bar, so remember some small coins!

We will start and end the evening, in a way many of you will surely remember! In addition, our alumni celebrating their 10th, 20th, 25th and 30th anniversaries will enjoy a special treat courtesy of the school. All other program details remain a secret until the night of the event.

If after the event ends at the school you feel that there needs to be more time to relive the “good old days”, rest assured that many will venture to one of Østerbro´s fine cafes. You are welcome to share pictures from the evening on our alumni (oldies) facebook page.

The final school day for our two ninth grade classes began with a brunch in the teachers room for both students and teachers. In addition to the excellent food, there was a festive atmosphere filled with songs and films made by the students themselves. The day continued with a “energirige show” where each class put on a performance full of jokes and memories. The day continued with a football match in the schoolyard and a water fight, which is tradition here at the school.

One of the many wonderful traditions at Institut Sankt Joseph occurs each Spring, when all 8th grade students have the opportunity to travel to Rome. Our students have a chance to experience the city; full of so much history throughout the ages. In addition to visiting ancient ruins, our students have had the pleasure of visiting Vatican City and taking some pictures of the pope himself.  In addition to seeing famous sites, our students visited a local school to see how school life operates in Rome. The trip is far more than just a touristic experience, as our students took part in feeding the homeless at a soup kitchen. This experience of helping those less fortunate, even outside of the borders of Denmark, has had an extremely positive effect on all that participated.

We had some wonderful days and the weather was quite kind to us. Klitborg lies in the middle of a plantation, five minutes from the most beautiful beach, where we painted scences of the landscape under Ove´s artistic tutelage- as if we were P.S. Krøyer ourselves. Cell phones were handed over to the teachers at the beginning of the retreat-and it was quite a challenge for the students to be without their beloved cells!

The students participated in meditation exercies, drew mandalas, went in pairs on a “walk and talk” stroll, and were greeted by headmaster Peter Franklin, who came and spent time with the students. The boys used all of their energy trying to retrieve soccer balls stuck up in the trees, after their wayward kicks!  We finally needed to get a new ball in Nykøbing, but it unfortunately ended up in the same place as the previous balls! In addition, there was tasty food on the menu; including, chocolate mousse, and the homemade råkreme on the fruit salad, which was a hit for breakfast the last morning of the retreat.

Students in 7th grade recently participated in an annual film festival, which is a competition between Institut Sankt Joseph and Sankt Annæ school in Amager. The idea is that students work together and have a week to create a short film, which are then presented first amongst the classes and finally at the film festival finals. Each class selected two films that were presented in the final showing on Wednesday the 30th of May.

The film festival culminated in the final round. The four films were seen, critiqued and finally judged by a panel consisting of Nicolaj Daugberg and Agnete Paludan. In the end there could only be one winner and this year first place went to Elisabeth, Asta, Thea, Winghy and Athena from Institut Sankt Joseph´s 7.b class.

A special thanks to Sankt Annæ for there contributions, both in the film making process and the positive collaboration and support throughout the week. We look forward to next year!

Oliver Twist er Charles Dicken klassiske historie om en fattig og forældreløs dreng. Den dramatiske historie, som udspiller sig i 1800-tallets London, omhandler emner som modgang, død og kærlighed. Vores fantastiske dramahold vil sørge for en spændende oplevelse med masser af sang og musik. Og så er det  oven i købet eleverne selv, som har skrevet musikken.

Der vil være tre shows for de studerende på skolen og en særlig aftenforestilling for familie og venner og andre beundrere af scenekunsten.

Today, Friday the 21st of March, we honour a tragic day for both our school and country. On this day in 1945, our sister school, Jean d’ Arc School in Frederiksberg, was accidentaly bombed by allied pilots during the English attack on the Gestapo headquarters in Copenhagen.  One of the bombers lost control during the approach into Copenhagen, and crashed into a nearby building in Frederiksberg, The following planes erroneously interpreted the crashed plane as a signal for where they should strike, and thus dropped bombs on the school. The tragedy that day led to the deaths of 86 school children and 18 adults, among them nuns who worked at the school.

There are many heroic stories from that day, wherin some of the sisters fearlessly tried to cover the children to protect them.  After the incident, the school never reopened. Most of the surviving children were transferred to our school, Institut Sankt Joseph, and thus became a part of the identity and history of our school.

On the school premises, we keep several monuments of our former sister school.  In front of the school there stands a sculpture showing a Saint Joseph Sister with two children by her side. The same motif is seen inside the school, and is the draft for a sculpture which today can be seen on Frederiksberg Allé. In addition,one can see a statue of Jean d’ Arc in the school yard. It is precisely this statue, which was undamaged in the bombing, that once stood in the garden of Jean d´Arc school.

Today we honor the children, adults and sisters who lost their lives and showed bravery that day. We carry the memory of their school and tradition forward and cherish the common history we share,  that tragically was brought about by the events in 1945.
