The day began with an introduction to her remarkable life story, followed by reading a chapter about her called ‘Mother and Child’ from Rory MacLean’s book Berlin.
The class then visited the SMK for Kollwitz’s powerful exhibition, Mensch, where guide Emil led a series of engaging activities. Students learned about Kollwitz’s artistic process, experimented with drawing techniques, and created their own works inspired by her themes. They wrote reflective pieces based on The Weavers’ Revolt and The Peasants’ War and collaborated on group poems inspired by her evocative sculptures.
8i all got to try their creative hand at drawing and writing as well as getting a deeper appreciation for Käthe Kollwitz’s artistry and powerful anti-war message.
